(Ok so this ain't long ... or good ... but it's quarter to 2 in the morning so cut me some slack)

All was quiet. No one was ever up for the post in the mornings (except on school days), and today was no exception. James, his mum Sarah, and Mo were all sound asleep in their beds - James' at this time still being a single bed, and Mo was in Sarah's bed as usual. The normal morning sounds of a summer morning were outside, and the sun streamed in through the east side of the house. All was quiet.

All of a sudden, the soft silence of the house was broken. The letterbox rattled in it's familiar way, and both James and Sarah leapt up. They raced out of their respective rooms and looked down the stairs. Despite Sarah's room being much closer to the stairs, it was James that got down there first to pick up the letter. He held it still for a moment, just looking at it. A large, regularly stamped white A4 envelope rested in James' 11-year-old hands, and as young as he was, James had already worked out what was inside. He stood only a moment longer before walking swiftly back upstairs. Sarah sat on the corner of her bed, and James handed her the letter. After all, it was addressed to her so why shouldn't she be the one to open it.

Neither person spoke as the top of the envelope was ripped, meanwhile Mo had seemingly gone back to sleep at the top of the same bed - totally unaware of what the fuss was. As Sarah slowly lifted the letter partially out of the envelope, James felt the familiar feeling of powerlessness. This was it - there was nothing he could do now, it was all done already.

"Oh my God"

Although James could detect a slightly happy tone in the rushed words his mother spoke, he wasn't prepared to jump to any conclusions. As Sarah leapt off the bed, dropping the envelope back down, James reached over to it.

"What?" He picked up the envelope and looked. He couldn't make out the watermark on the right hand side of the letter, since it was in script font and was typed sideways. He pulled more of the letter out and tilted his head until he read it;

'King Edward Vi Grammar School'

"Oh my God!" James felt happier than he ever had done in his entire life. All the work he'd put in to primary school had paid off, and now he was going to his first-choice secondary school this september. 'The best grammar school in the county' he had heard it called, and he was going to be a proud part of its history.

He ran over and hugged his mother, both of whom were ecstatic. He just knew this was going to be the happiest memory he would ever have...
